In 2016, an emphasis on company culture became the hot topic in the HR world. But, why does company culture matter? It matters because you want it to be the right fit, just like when you move in with someone. You spend a lot of time with your co-workers and are communicating with them daily throughout the week, so you want to make sure you like the environment and the people that you work with. The environment and the people are what define the company culture.
The notion that an awesome work culture only exists in Silicon Valley for millennials is now a myth. Of course, who doesn’t want to work at Google? However, any company can create a cool and fun environment to work in. Imagine walking into work with a ping pong table, foosball, a fun coffee bar, the possibilities are endless… just Google them 🙂 But, then you look around and no one is talking to each other, everyone looks upset and tense. What’s wrong? The focus was on the environment and not on the culture. You can have all of the cool new trendy items and still not nail your company culture.
So how do you nail company culture and increased happiness among all employees? Here a few key items to consider. An awesome culture has clear expectations vs constant promotions, is proactive, holds employees accountable, is consistent, and is Authentic. People can communicate openly with one another and they focus on what is working. Your employees can work individually and together as a flawless team within the right community.
