[teaser]Last week, I sat down with our Director of IT Infrastructure, Amol Kedar to learn more about the ThunderPlug®. As the newest member of the iFormBuilder team, this was a great opportunity for me to learn about this awesome technology. Enjoy the excerpt from our conversation below.[/teaser]
EE: So, the iFormBuilder team has developed a device called the ThunderPlug®. What exactly does this device do?
AK: The ThunderPlug® is a hardware device that extends the full capabilities of the iFormBuilder platform without the need of a connection or even electricity. The ThunderPlug® creates a local wireless network (some teams call it the “baby cloud”) that allows teams to capture data, consume the data and collaborate with the data even in the most remote areas of the world. Data is stored locally on the ThunderPlug® and can be synced with the clients cloud when back in a connected environment.
EE: What makes the ThunderPlug® such a game changer in the market?
AK: The ThunderPlug® is different from other devices based on its ability to not only create a network of its own but to allow for real time collaboration and data cleansing in the field. With our focus on data integrity and good data, The ThunderPlug® gives field users the ability to validate data in the field and even reassign records back to the data collectors to insure data quality and accuracy.
Originally, the ThunderPlug® was created to solve a business problem for field teams in remote areas of Africa. However, we have learned that there is a much larger need for robust data collection in remote areas beyond NGO’s and International Development groups.
EE: Awesome! That being said, what are some examples where the ThunderPlug® is used?
AK: The ThunderPlug® can be used in various implementations in remote/rural areas where there is scarcity of resources such as power, internet, etc. As mentioned before, the classic use case is for International Development groups and NGO groups in developing countries. The ThunderPlug® can also be used in secure implementations where an internet connection could be a risk of exposing data like federal institutions, research institutions, or other ultra secure environments as the data can be pulled directly from the ThunderPlug® without ever going to the cloud. We have use cases in engineering, mining and healthcare verticals. Basically any application leveraging the features of the iFormBuilder platform requiring teams to capture data on mobile devices and not rely on connectivity or power is a potential use case. the ThunderPlug® has already been used in Disaster Recovery allowing for capturing data including photos and GPS during a disaster providing valuable data for quicker recovery.

EE: How many devices can a ThunderPlug® support?
AK: One plug can support up to 20 devices simultaneously.
EE: What kinds of companies is the ThunderPlug® made for?
AK: The ThunderPlug® is made for organizations that have data collection needs in remote places where an internet connection and or power is hard or expensive to find. By using the ThunderPlug® they can collect data in the field and sync it to the plug without having to worry about memory, battery life and disk limitations of the mobile device. We have law enforcement agencies, cruise lines, NGO’s, government agencies, government contractors, universities, engineering firms, agricultural groups and even marketing groups exploring ThunderPlug® implementations.
EE: Are companies able to perform any other activities in the field with the ThunderPlug®, like assign records or build forms while offline?
AK: Yes, customers can build forms while offline and can assign records to their devices. The newly created forms can also be synced with the cloud databases.
EE: Once data is collected and shared with the ThunderPlug®, can the data be synced with the iFormBuilder dedicated database?
AK: Data can be synced with the cloud database from the ThunderPlug® when it is connected back to the network.
EE: How can companies get started with the ThunderPlug®?
AK: Companies require a Growing or Emerging iFormBuilder Plan to leverage the ThunderPlug®. Simply contact us and we will be happy to walk thru a demo and your requirements. We ship the configured ThunderPlug® directly to the office or to the field.
Thanks so much for talking with me, Amol! Learn more about the ThunderPlug®.
